How Council Tax is calculated from your band

Every council sets a band D charge. Each other band pays a fixed fraction of it: A pays six-ninths, B seven-ninths, C eight-ninths, E eleven-ninths, F thirteen-ninths, G fifteen-ninths and H eighteen-ninths (twice band D). Your annual bill is your band’s fraction of the band D charge, minus any discounts or reductions.

For 2026/27, the average band D charge in England is £2,392. Average band D by type of area:

Monthly Council Tax: 10 or 12 instalments?

Councils usually split the annual bill into ten monthly payments, often April to January, so February and March are payment-free. You can usually ask your council to spread it over twelve months instead, which makes each payment smaller but does not change the yearly total.

Discounts that lower your bill

  • Single person discount: 25% off if you are the only adult in the home, or everyone else is disregarded.
  • Council Tax Reduction: help for people on a low income, applied for through your council. Check on GOV.UK.
  • Disabled Band Reduction: a qualifying home can be charged as if it were one band lower (band A gets a 17% discount).

The £100 energy payment is separate from these discounts. Check whether your band is in the £100 payment scope.

Council Tax calculator questions

How much is Council Tax per month?

At the 2026/27 England average, band D is £2,392 a year: £239.20 a month over ten instalments or £199.33 over twelve. Band A averages £132.89 a month over twelve and band H £398.67. Your council’s rate will differ.

Why is my Council Tax higher than the average?

Each council, police authority, fire authority and parish sets its own share, so band D charges vary by area. Unitary and shire areas averaged more than London in 2026/27. Check your council’s published band D figure and enter it in the calculator.

Does the £100 energy payment reduce my Council Tax?

Not as announced. The £100 Household Energy Payment for England bands A–D is separate support, with payments announced from January 2027. Direct Debit payers will be paid automatically and councils will invite other households to apply.
